Teaching Philosophy
Joshua’s studio is an affirming, nurturing environment in which to develop your skills and gifts. Students are empowered by applying functional, straightforward technique in a creative and supportive atmosphere.
In the studio, I believe it is imperative to establish a supportive, nurturing environment that fosters technical and artistic growth and creativity. I strive to apply a functional, systematic method to vocal technique and encourage students to shed their judgements and preconceived limitations about their voice to promote a healthy, pragmatic mindset around their training.
I believe it is important to concede that students bring outside emotions and challenges that deeply influence their voice and ego, and I aim to tailor my instruction to honor those experiences and my students’ individuality. My goal is for the student to build a personal lexicon of language to describe positive physical sensations to meaningfully engage in a comprehensive and informed dialogue about their vocal technique.
As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I understand the importance of creating a safe space that reflects the diverse community of my studio; validating and affirming the lived experiences of all my students and singers. From carefully choosing repertoire that reflects your humanity to curating showcases highlighting the music of women, LGBTQIA+, and BIPOC artists, I aim to provide my students and their communities a place that they feel seen, appreciated, loved, and heard.
My private studio is comprised of students from various backgrounds and abilities, ranging from avocational learners to professional performers at local, regional, and national venues. My students perform a vast range of repertoire including pop, rock, R&B, jazz, classical, and musical theatre and have received awards at local and national NATS competitions. I frequently host studio classes where students can practice their craft in a compassionate, low-stakes environment comprised of their peers and select students to perform in thematically curated showcases at popular venues in the metro-Boston area (including Club Café, The Burren, The Record Co., Rengo Studios, etc). Whether your goal is to tread those infamous boards or just belt more Celine Dion on your commute, my goal is to provide you the skill set and support to sing with more ease and joy!
